Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort Maine Wedding | Taryn & Brad

When I met Taryn and Brad last year and photographed their engagement session, it was apparent from the start how much love was between them. They were so easy to photograph and their session is still one of my all time favorites.

When September 30th, 2017 came, I photographed the girls getting ready at the Sheepscot Harbour Village Resort in Edgecomb, Maine. They stayed at a lovely cottage with a life size wire carriage in the front. The lawn of the Water’s Edge was the perfect location for Taryn and Brad’s first look. We took couple’s portraits in the gardens by the gazebo and on the docks overlooking Wiscasset and the Donald E. Davey Bridge.

Taryn and Brad’s wedding ceremony was breathtakingly beautiful. Not only was it decorated in the most beautiful flower arrangements, but the sky had just enough cloud cover for the most perfect lighting a photographer could ever hope for!

The couple was announced into their wedding reception, which took place at the Water’s Edge Banquet & Function Facility and they shared their first dance as husband and wife. After a delicious buffet meal and the heartfelt toast and speeches, we snuck out at sunset for some amazing photos on the docks. After that, Brad shared a very special parent dance with his mom. The reception events wrapped up with the cake cutting, bouquet toss and an unforgettable sparkler exit. All in all, Taryn and Brad’s wedding was nothing short of spectacular. I can’t wait to share all of these wonderful memories I captured through photographs with them.

I asked Taryn to tell me a little more about her and Brad’s special day:

How did you envision your wedding being prior to planning?

I always knew it would be on the ocean. Maine is HOME, and it was important that we incorporated the things that are special about it, into our big day.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

Our colors were navy, gray/silver, and cream. As far as style, we had a coastal theme with a touch of elegance. I wanted to pull pieces of the Maine Coast but couldn't leave behind my love of glam and anything that sparkles!

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

That is so hard to answer! The whole day was made up of so many perfect moments with all the people I love the most. If I HAD to pick just one, I would say the walk down the aisle. It gave me a moment to breathe, to really take everything in, to take a look around at all the special people we have in our lives that were there to celebrate with us, and getting to see my amazing husband with the biggest smile on his face there waiting for me at the end.

What song did you do your first dance to?

You & Me by Dave Matthews Band. It's a very special song to us. We knew that we weren't exactly professional dancers and were slightly nervous about choosing it because it has some parts that are a little fast. Even though we knew from the start no other song would mean as much to us, we threw around other ideas over our year of wedding planning. Ultimately we knew there was no other choice. I remember one night not long before the wedding, after a couple glasses of wine, practicing our whirls and twirls in the kitchen for the faster parts of the song. Let's just say it wasn’t pretty!! The funny part is, we weren’t even nervous about it. We knew no matter what, it would be special. Somehow, we managed to nail all those whirls and twirls! I remember us both having the biggest smiles on our faces after the first one, half shocked that we pulled it off! Maybe that was my favorite moment!

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

I am so in love with our wedding flowers! I received an arrangement for my birthday from Blue Fern Designs a couple of years ago and was so amazed at how gorgeous it was that I told her then, even before I was engaged, that she would be the one to do my wedding flowers. Blue thistle, heirloom garden roses, lots of greenery and pops of pink. Everyone was truly blown away at how amazing the bouquets and arrangements were. The arbor was straight out of my dreams. She truly couldn't have followed my vision any more perfectly.

My wedding dress is the most amazing dress I have ever seen. I had a set designer in my mind when I went dress shopping. The very first dress I tried on happened to be that designer! I pulled that dress through, round after round, thinking I had found the one. Just as I thought we were done and my mind was made up, the consultant brought out one more. A completely different designer. It had been marked down by 50% that morning, was being discontinued, and the only one left was the sample they had in the store that happened to be my size. I remember trying it in and knowing without a doubt THIS is the one. It has the most amazing detail. I have never seen a more gorgeous train. It fit me and my body so perfectly; I truly felt it was made for me.

Picking out wedding favors was one of the hardest things to choose, for us! We both love chocolate, probably way more than we should, and knew that likely we weren’t the only ones. Probably the only time we will have 20 lbs of Hershey kisses delivered to our house!

Our cake was a dream! Brad and I actually got engaged in the tower of West Quoddy Head Light in Lubec. I absolutely love lighthouses and that was one I wanted to visit for years. Brad got in touch with the lighthouse keeper before our trip and managed to get him to let us up in the tower off season so he could propose. (How lucky am I to have such a thoughtful husband??) Brad’s cousin was actually planning their wedding as we were planning ours and showed me a photo of their cake inspiration. As she was walking over to show me the photo on her phone, from afar, it kind of looked like a lighthouse! We had never even dreamed of a lighthouse cake but at that moment, it made perfect sense! West Quoddy was such a special place to us, why not incorporate it into our wedding?? Jill(The Winey Baker) is so talented! Not only was it super tasty, a lot of people didn’t even realize initially that it was our wedding cake! The design was flawless! I didn’t even want to cut it, it was so perfect!

What advice would you give to couples who are currently planning their wedding?

Give yourself plenty of time. Planning should be fun and exciting! You want to be able to enjoy it. DONT STRESS! Everything comes together just as it should. You are surrounded by so much love and so many people you care about. Ultimately THAT is what matters.

Stage Neck Inn York Maine Wedding | Lindsey and Owen

On September 9th, 2017, Lindsey and Owen were married at the Stage Neck Inn in York, Maine. They had their first look and ceremony on the lawn overlooking the ocean. They were lucky enough to have a very beautiful sunset that evening, which made for some amazing photos. Lindsey and Owen were announced into their reception where they shared their first dance. After the speeches and toasts, everyone enjoyed a lovely dinner. After dinner, the couple shared dances with their parents, they cut their wedding cake and Lindsey did a bouquet toss. The rest of the evening, Lindsey and Owen danced the night away surrounded by family and friends. It was truly the most perfect day anyone could hope for.

I asked Lindsey some questions about her special day:

How did you envision your wedding being prior to planning?

We originally wanted to have a beautiful barn wedding but I also loved the ocean at the same time. I was down in York one day and I had just ran into Stage Neck Inn and fell in love immediately. I took Owen down there next chance we got and he felt the same way. I wanted a classic, elegant wedding with beautiful flowers and wanted the most beautiful backdrop by the ocean.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

Our color palette was teal, white/cream, and peach. Teal was centered around the bridesmaid dresses and groomsmen's bow ties. We choose a lot of cream ribbons and peach flowers. We added a little bit of violet in my bouquet with berries and having a layer of blueberry in our cake too!

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

Owen's favorite moment was the first look we did by the ocean. It gave us a second to enjoy our day just the two of us. My favorite moment was walking down the aisle. I loved that Owen was standing there waiting. It was surreal to be surrounded by all these family and friends we have known for ever and having our best friends stand by us.

What song did you do your first dance to?

Thomas Rhett - Die A Happy Man

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

Flowers were from York Flower Shop, centerpieces were hurricane vases surrounded by a floral wreath of baby's breath, greens and berries. They had a little sand in the bottom with a white candle. The bridesmaid bouquets were made with baby's breath and peach David Austin roses.  My gown was from David’s Bridal. It was mermaid cut with a beautiful belt that was sewn in. It was the dress I just kept putting back on and I knew it was the one from the start. I had a lace veil from David’s Bridal as well. My wedding favors were from Maine Wedding Artist, aka Beth!  They were hand painted buoys to match our wedding colors. I had seen these in stores in Portland and online right after we got engaged and I knew I had to have these as our favors! Our cake was made by Cake Elizabeth, it was white to teal ombre frosting 4 tier alternating flavor of blueberry and Baileys cream with champagne cake throughout.

What advice would you give to couples who are currently planning their wedding?

Keep calm and plan on! Tackle the big picture things first, you don't want to be scrambling on anything super important super late in the game. Tough decisions will be made, don't be afraid to upset people, it's your day. Most importantly, enjoy the process and have fun with it.

North Peak Lodge Sunday River Maine Wedding: Katie and David

On July 22nd, 2017, Katie and David were married at Peak Lodge, which is one of Sunday River’s many mountain-side wedding ceremony locations. The unique chairlift transportation to the venue provided the couple and their wedding guests with spectacular views during the seven minute ride. The wedding ceremony took place at the arbor of the outdoor patio of the lodge, which overlooks the breathtaking Newry and Bethel Maine mountainside.

The couple shared their first dance on the dance floor of the beautiful wood-beamed lodge. After the heartfelt toasts and speeches by Katie’s father, the best man and maid of honor, everyone enjoyed a wonderful dinner. The buffet style dinner stations featured Maine lobster rolls, beef tenderloin and fresh steamed vegetables.

We took Katie and David outside again at sunset to take advantage of the amazing colors in the sky that evening. They were so lucky to have such a perfect location for their wedding photos!

Everyone enjoyed the rest of the reception which included great dance music and of course, a packed dance floor. To finish off the prefect evening, Katie and David’s wedding guests surrounded them with sparklers as they said their farewells and departed as husband and wife.

Here’s a little more about the wedding in Katie’s words:

Tell us how the two of you met.

We met while playing trivia at a local pizza place.

Please describe you how you got engaged.

The proposal took place on Christmas Eve. It was the first Christmas that we didn't travel out of state to see family. Dave made dinner for us and then we decided to open our gifts instead of waiting until Christmas. After we opened our presents, Dave said that he might have one more gift and gave me the ring. We didn't call or tell anyone until the next day. We went skiing on Christmas Day.

What was your vision and color palate for your wedding?

Our color palette was navy and blush. I wanted the wedding to be simple but beautiful.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

I think my favorite moment of our wedding day was just seeing all our friends and family in one place. I also liked the chairlift ride up to the venue.

What was your first dance song?

Our first dance was to Make You Feel My Love by Bob Dylan.

Tell us about the details of your special day, including your dress, flowers, cake, etc.

Our flowers were really simple, pale pink roses and spider poms with a lot of greenery. We had cupcakes instead of cake and they were delicious. We had four flavors; chocolate, red velvet, strawberry and carrot.  My dress is from Allure Bridals and is a strapless, sheath style dress in antique/ivory with lace and beadwork. Our rings are from Brilliant Earth, their diamonds are all ethically sourced and the metals are recycled.

Sunday River Jordan Terrace Newry Maine Wedding

Sunday River Resort, located in the heart of the mountains of western Maine, is the perfect destination to say “I do.” I was thrilled when I learned that Elizabeth and Robert would be having their wedding at Jordan Terrace, which is one of the many locations at Sunday River that hosts ceremonies and receptions.

Their wedding ceremony at Jordan Terrace offered scenic views of Sunday River’s alpine Jordan Bowl, which provided a picturesque outdoor ceremony. Following the ceremony was a lovely wedding reception at Sliders Restaurant, whose intimate post-and-beam architecture made for a unique location.

Perhaps the most amazing moment was when a rainbow appeared right over the mountains surrounding Jordan Terrace. It was truly a sight to be seen!

I asked Elizabeth to tell me a little more about her and Robert’s special day:

How did you two meet?

We met in 2012 when I first started my big girl job at UPMC.

When and where did your engagement take place? Please describe the proposal.

I actually proposed to Rob. Our 3 year dating anniversary was coming up and I decided to pop the question when we were heading south to Hot Springs, North Carolina Memorial weekend. I ordered his engagement/wedding band online from Ireland before hand and it was burning a hole in my pocket. On our get away, we went for a short hike and had BLTs’ for lunch and I knew if I didn’t take the opportunity then to do it, I would lose all confidence in ever doing it. So, I told him “You can’t say no.”, pulled out the ring box from under the couch and slid the ring on his finger. He was bit confused then asked if we were officially engaged.

How did you envision your wedding being prior to planning?

I knew I wanted a small, relaxed, chill wedding with minimal planning involved but with delicious food.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

We chose lilac, grey, and champagne and wanted minimal decorations/planning involved with the wedding because at the time we were living in Pittsburgh and anticipating a move in December up to Boston.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

Watching everyone enjoying themselves

What song did you do your first dance to?

Thousand years cover by Boyce Avenue

Tell us about your flowers, your gown and your cake.

I folded both paper bouquets. It took about 8 months to do, made the pistol and stamen for some of the flowers using wire, a hot glue, and yellow nail polish, and added fake baby’s breath.

My gown is a homage to both the Korean and American culture. The white dress color and veil was the Western take on the outfit where the East was a modern twist on the Korean traditional hanbok/paebak dress including the headpiece, petticoat, socks, pants, and shoes.

Our cake was a basic cake with Maine blueberry filling.

Wentworth By the Sea New Castle New Hampshire Wedding

On June 10th, 2017, Jillian and James were married at the Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, New Hampshire. Their ceremony took place outside at the gazebo and it was the perfect warm, late spring day for the couple to exchange vows. After the ceremony, we did portraits all over the lovely property of the resort. There were so many beautiful locations that included flower gardens, open areas of perfectly-mowed lawn, and even a quaint little arbor. Once we finished the portraits, a lovely reception followed in the Wentworth Ballroom. Jillian and James were announced in and their wedding party surrounded the dance floor as the couple shared their first dance. Next, they received four heartfelt speeches and toasts. After the cake was cut, there was a garter and bouquet toss. The rest of the evening was filled with laughter, dancing and unforgettable memories.

I’m so honored to have been part of Jillian and James’ special day and had a blast working with them. I asked Jillian to share a little more about their love story:

When and where did your engagement take place? Please describe the proposal.

Our engagement happened on Valentine’s Day of 2016. James had the whole day planned out with some funny jokes along the way. All day he had been giving me joke gifts: in the morning he came down with a ring box and got on one knee, when he opened it it was a candy ring. This threw me off so I had no idea we would be getting engaged that day. He took me out for coffee at our favorite shop in Kittery, Lil’s Cafe. After that he asked if I wanted to go to Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH for a quick walk, I was hesitant since it was the coldest day of the winter that day but we went. He took a gift bag out of the car and we walked over to the bench we had sat on our first date. He had me open the gift and I took out a necklace box and I just assumed this was a valentine’s gift, I opened it up and it was a candy necklace :)  I laughed and turned to put it down and when I turned back around he was down on one knee with the actual engagement ring.

What did you envision your wedding being prior to planning?

I always envisioned our wedding in the summer somewhere close to the ocean. I have grown up on the coast of New England my whole life so being near the ocean was important to me. I went through many theme and color ideas but I really just wanted a classic, timeless style wedding.

What was your color palette and your style vision?

Our color palette was Shades of Blue, grey and white. James and I's favorite color is blue so we definitely knew we wanted lots of blue. My style vision was a classic New England coastal wedding, which is why we went with the Wentworth as a venue because it really shows that historic feel of this area. We were both born and raised in New England, on the coast and we truly love this area.

What is your favorite moment of your wedding day?

My favorite moment was when my dad first saw me, and also when I walked down the aisle and saw James. He looked so happy and stunned which is what I was hoping for! We also of course loved the dancing! It was really hard to pick a moment because we thought the whole day was so perfect!!

What song did you do your first dance to?

Our First dance was to Everything by Michael Buble. We chose it because it was an upbeat and fun love song!

Tell us about your flowers, your gown, your favors, your cake, etc.

My gown was a Maggie Sottero, trumpet style gown, champagne color under the lace overlay. It had rhinestones around the sweetheart neckline. For our flowers we wanted to have garden flowers: Peonies, Garden roses, tweedia and lots of greenery. I wanted the style of flowers to be natural and free flowing. The centerpieces had blue and white hydrangeas, white peonies and dark blue delphinium to contrast the white and light blue. Our cake had three different flavors: Lemon strawberry, middle layer was carrot and the top layer was a lemon ginger. The cake was white decorated with blue hydrangeas and white roses. Our favors were made by my Mom Bernadette, who has her own garden pottery business. She made the little boxes and they were filled with mints.

What advice would you give to couples who are currently planning their wedding?

Advice for couples planning their wedding is leave the stress out of it and just enjoy the process. I went into our wedding feeling so relaxed because we hired such great people to handle everything. Don't stress because it's one of the happiest times of your life, so even if things don't always go perfectly always have fun with the process and especially on the day of your wedding!
